Unemployment Insurance Modernization, Update on State Activity

In a hearing last week before the Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support of the House Committee on Ways and Means, Ray Uhalde, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Labor, provided the following update on USDOL state certification for Unemployment Insurance Modernization Incentive Funds. New Jersey was the first state to apply for and receive its entire share of the incentive funds, totaling $206.8 million.

Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and South Dakota's applications for the first 1/3 of their share of the incentive payment have been approved by USDOL and these states have received a total of $200.3 million.

Minnesota's application for its entire share, and applications from New York, Hawaii and Virginia for their first 1/3 shares of incentive funds, are currently under review by the USDOL.

Sixteen more state laws contain provisions which would make them eligible for the first third of the incentive payments; USDOL is awaiting receipt of their applications.

Further Information on approved state applications is available below and information on qualifying may be found here.
