The James F. Walls Workforce Agency Employee
Award honors an employee whose conduct
demonstrates outstanding dedication to customers
and colleagues, and extraordinary service to the local
community.
Walter L. Cox began his employment with the South
Carolina Employment Security Commission on April
25, 1980, in the Charleston office. He immediately
displayed the qualities of a tireless worker with the
flexibility and know-how to work in any area of the
Agency. In 1996, Mr. Cox was granted a transfer to
the Beaufort office where he was assigned to serve as
coordinator of the Agency's farm program.
Almost immediately the accolades started pouring
in. Mr. Cox's lengthy personnel file is full of notes,
cards and letters from satisfied customers he has
helped throughout his career. Over the years, Mr. Cox
has assisted job seekers in finding employment by referring them to employers in the area with job openings. He has also assisted employers with staffing new stores and
businesses, receiving numerous letters of accommodation supporting this claim. One letter in particular explains "His
knowledge of the market, as well as the hiring process, helped me make decisions that not only saved me time, but
saved my company thousands of dollars."
Mr. Cox is not limited to providing prompt, professional, and courteous service to his customers at the South Carolina
Employment Security Commission. He is also active in many community organizations. He has been the Project
Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child for many years. This Project coordinates the efforts of several churches
to provide a meaningful Christmas for many children in the area who would otherwise not have a Christmas.
Mr. Cox is also involved with Angel Food Ministries, a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to
providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. With this group he helps
with the ordering, distribution, and organizing of volunteers.
Walter is also on his neighborhood Picket Fences Committee, and is a coach for his church league's softball team.
His son, Jamie, says his father never missed seeing him playing in a game.
Over the past year, as record-level unemployment created a colossal workload, Walter Cox has been on the front lines
working to improve the daily output and services offered by the South Carolina Employment Security Commission.
Walter is an outstanding employee and is truly deserving of the James F. Walls Award.
