Employment Taxes: White Paper Outlines Program To Support Unemployed Americans Through Flat Tax Three economists outlined a policy proposal published July 30 that would institute a program to help unemployed workers, costing $22 billion annually and funded by a flat tax levied on all wages. The report, Succeeding in the Global Economy: An Adjustment Assistance Program for American Workers, was commissioned by the Financial Services Forum, a nonpartisan economic policy organization comprised of the chief executive officers of the country's largest financial services companies. GAO Report: Employment Verification: Challenges Exist in Implementing a Mandatory Electronic Employment Verification System The GAO report found a mandatory E-Verify program would necessitate an increased capacity at both U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and SSA to accommodate the estimated 7.4 million employers in the United States. According to USCIS, as of April 2008, more than 61,000 employers have registered for E-Verify, and about half are active users. (05/08/08) |
