US Department of Labor Announces Nearly $55 Million in Green Jobs Training Grants
U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced nearly $55 million in green jobs grants, as authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grants will support job training and labor market information programs to help workers, many in underserved communities, find jobs in expanding green industries and related occupations.   (11/18/09)
1,776 Extended Mass Layoffs In Third Quarter Top Previous High For Period
Nonfarm businesses conducted 1,776 extended mass layoffs involving 50 or more workers in the third quarter, an increase of 12.3 percent from 1,581 such layoffs of 31 days or more a year earlier and the most on record for any third quarter, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Nov. 10.  (11/16/09)
Job Openings, Hires, Separations Held Steady In September
The number of full-time and part-time jobs open at the end of September stood at 2,480,000, a slight increase of 57,000 from August's total of 2,423,000, according to data released Nov. 10 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  (11/16/09)
Jobless Rate To Stay Above 7 Percent Until 2013, Many Blue Chip Panelists Say
Economists believe the nation's unemployment rate, which in October climbed into double-digit territory for the first time since the early 1980s, will remain above 7 percent until 2013, according to the latest Blue Chip survey report, released Nov. 10 by Aspen Publishers.  (11/16/09)

UI Cutoff Date Poses Challenges For States
Legislation signed into law recently extends EUC08 benefits to provide up to 14 additional weeks in all 50 states, and up to 20 weeks in states with a three-month average unemployment rate of at least 8.5 percent.  (11/16/09)
USDOL Hosts Annual Salute To Veterans
The United States Department of Labor hosted its annual Salute to Veterans event on Thursday, November 5th. The event was hosted by Ray Jefferson the new Assistant Secretary for Veterans Employment and Training Service. Also in attendance was Hilda Solis, Secretary of Labor; Seth Harris, Deputy Secretary of Labor; and members of Congress including Senator Daniel Akaka (HI), Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.   (11/16/09)
